86 Counties is an online magazine of current events, politics, arts, human interest, and humour published quarterly (January, April, July and October) in English for a predominantly British audience and for all others with a common interest in the periodical's subject matter.
The mission of Open Books is to publish literature online and offer it to readers worldwide free of charge.

Recognizing the vast and virtually untapped potential of Internet publishing, Open Books publishes literature in three specific areas: Classics, Moderns and Futures (which include experimental literature and literary efforts in multi-media formats).

Open Books further recognizes the need to move the literary publishing industry into a more environmentally friendly atmosphere, therefore all Open Books publications are paper-free and distributed without the use of petrol or other deleterious fuels customarily used in transporting bulk goods.

Open Books operates as a for profit organization, although the owners of Open Books understand and acknowledge the need to contribute resources generously back into the community at large. Therefore, Open Books does not offer its products for sale directly, rather it operates by our ‘Adopt-A-Book’ sponsorship program, where a significant amount of revenues are redistributed into the arts community as contributions to literacy programs, as well as grants to living writers through our Dead Writers' Society, where present-day authors are the beneficiaries of efforts of those now deceased and whose work is in public domain.

Lastly, it is the mission of Open Books to provide and preserve literary excellence in a timeless and artistic venue for all the peoples of the world to enjoy regardless of their location or economic station in life. We believe in and adhere to the premise that in order to truly free art, it must indeed be free. All payment for Open Books products shall be voluntary, as our primary commerce is in the realm of ideas.

ADOPT-A-BOOK PROGRAM

Below is a brief outline of the ADOPT-A-BOOK program and what happens to your donation when you decide to adopt a book.

You may choose to adopt any book in the Open Books Library. No matter which book(s) you choose to adopt, fifty percent of your donation(s) are given back to the Arts Community in one of the following three ways:

1. The Dead Writer’s Society Grant when you Adopt-A-Classic. This is an award given every year on 6 January to a living writer. The first grant will be awarded when the percentage of grant money available reaches at least $1000.

2. Author Payment when you Adopt-A-Modern or Adopt-A-Future. All books in our Moderns and Futures series are written by living writers; therefore adopting a Moderns or Futures is similar to buying a print book except the payment to the author is far higher.

3. Open Books Literacy Fund when you adopt any book.
